Local food & farming

Talk inspires … and sets some homework!

River Bourne Community Farm vision

River Bourne Community Farm - the vision

Ben Parker, from River Bourne Community Farm in Salisbury and Nick Snelgar, from Future Farms Co-operative at Martin both spoke at our recent ‘Local Food and Farming’ meeting.   Ben spoke of his vision for a community based project to re-create a working farm, such as those of the 1950s/1960s.   The farm is readily accessible to local schools and provides a ‘hands on’ educational experience for local children.

Nick talked about the ‘Future Farm’ project in Martin, where local households are involved in growing their own food.  This project started some 7 years ago, with the aim of producing as much food as possible locally and raising people’s awareness of the source of their food.  For those whose appetite had been whetted by his talk … Read more on Local food & farming

Wiltshire Council Waste Collection & Recycling – have your say

19854_18080_WRAPNewport27Mar09100

Wiltshire Council are currently consulting on proposed changes to their waste collection service which will see alternate weekly rubbish collections introduced across the county.

Evidence from other councils has shown that, where alternate weekly collections are introduced – recycleable material one week, residual waste the next – recycling rates have improved.  For this reason, South Wiltshire Agenda 21 are supporting the proposed changes.

Wiltshire Council affirm support for Nottingham Declaration & 10:10 Campaign

There was great concern across Wiltshire when 9 councillors signed up to a motion put to the Wiltshire Council meeting on 15.9.09 requesting that the Council withdraw from the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change (a commitment to tackle the causes and effects of Climate Change).

However there was cause for celebration when the motion was resoundingly defeated – the final recorded vote showed 6 in favour of the motion and 84 voting against (i.e. in support of the Declaration).  Not all of those who had signed up to the motion in fact supported it after the debate!

Help save the 2 degree limit – G8 Summit in Rome

Avaaz.org is encouraging all climate campaigners and anyone who cares about the global effort to retard man-made global worming to make their voice heard in a worldwide petition to be presented to the G8 representatives in Rome this week.

Avaaz says:

The G8, meeting in Rome this week, is weighing a pledge to limit global warming below 2 degrees centigrade, the level at which scientists say a deadly climate chain reaction becomes dangerously likely. Canada, Japan, and Russia are trying to veto the 2-degree limit — and an immediate global outcry is needed to rescue it.
